Begun as a motion-picture show theatre headache in early 1995 by filmmakers Stefán Ãrni and Siggi Kjartansson, the mathematical group was gradually expanded to include musicians such as DJ Herb Legowitz and programmer Biggi Thórarinsson as well as singer/songwriters DanÃel Ãgúst, HafdÃs Huld, and Magnús Jónsson (former actors all), a cameraman (Steph), and a producer (Baldur Stefánsson). The band's decidedly indie sensibilities light-emitting semiconductor diode to their signing by 4AD after a four-part series of terpsichore blend in EPs during 1996. Among a handful of groups in the late '90s with access to both closely knit dance circles as well as the notoriously highly strung indie community, the group gained support from LFO (with Mark Bell's remix of "Believe") and i of London's about noted DJ stores, Fat Cat Records, while playacting their first day of the month in England. Coming up strong behindhand R. Stevie Moore as the most talented singer/songwriter to be based in the nondescript chamber community of Montclair, NJ, Jenny Owen Youngs looks like Lindsay Lohan's indie-kid younger sister (though, ironically, the baby-faced Youngs is in fact about a half-decade old than the hard-partying actress-singer) merely sounds like an all successful spinal fusion of Liz Phair's perceptive and nervily comical lyrics and the orchestrated folk-pop of Regina Spektor and Erin McKeown, with barely a wind of Nellie McKay's jazzy floorshow leanings and Cat Power's throaty, confessional angst. Born in New Jersey in 1981 and raised in the common suburban surroundings, Youngs first picked up the guitar at the age of 14 and attended the music program at the State University of New York at Purchase at a time when that previously hidden prowess shoal was single-handed populating what would become the entire New York "anti-folk" scene: besides Youngs and Spektor, Jeffrey Lewis, Langhorne Slim, and the Moldy Peaches' Adam Green and Kimya Dawson were all SUNY-Purchase graduates. Maintaining a friendship with Spektor, world Health Organization chose Youngs as her curtain raising act on the tours following her breakthrough album, Soviet Kitsch, Youngs wrote and recorded her debut album, 2005's self-released Batten the Hatches. Although the album garnered in general positivist reviews, it attracted small notice until one of its highlights, the rueful "Screwing Was I," was put-upon in the second-season undoer of the popular overseas telegram sitcom Weeds. Signing with the Canadian indie Nettwerk Records, Youngs released a remixed and repackaged version of Batten the Hatches in early 2007.

Coldplay debut at No. 1 on US album charts
British rock band Coldplay's new album has debuted at No. 1 on the US pop music charts, largely bucking the sales slides that have affected other musicians.
Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, Coldplay's fourth release, sold more than 720,000 copies in the six days ended Sunday, Capitol Records said.
Its previous album, X&Y, also debuted at No. 1, selling 737,000 copies during its first week in June 2005.
But total US album sales have fallen more than 20 per cent in that period, according to tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan.
Stars have had to adjust their sights much lower as music piracy and competition from videogames take their toll.
The new Coldplay album also topped the charts in Britain, Japan, Australia, Canada, France and Germany, Capitol said. The single, Viva La Vida, is also No. 1 in both the United States and Britain.
The album's strong performance delivers a psychological boost to Capitol's struggling British parent company EMI Group, which was bought last year by private-equity firm Terra Firma for about $6.4 billion.
Terra Firma chief Guy Hands has ruffled feathers by laying off thousands of employees and introducing fiscal disciplines that are largely foreign to the freewheeling music business.
Among the skeptics was Coldplay manager Dave Holmes, who told the Times of London in January that Coldplay was "in no hurry" to deliver its album, adding, "Why would you want to release an album with a record company in the midst of massive lay-offs? Coldplay have a lot of options."
In the end, Coldplay's management brought in their own team of consultants and advisers to supplement EMI's sales and marketing efforts.
Coldplay, led by singer/songwriter Chris Martin, has promoted the album with free concerts in London, Barcelona and New York. The single was also used in an iTunes commercial.
The band will begin a North American tour in Los Angeles on July 14.
Coldplay has sold more than 11 million albums in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Its top seller is 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head, its second release, which moved 4.5 million copies.
X&Y, which inspired the New York Times to describe Coldplay as "the most insufferable band of the decade," sold 3.2 million copies.
After dominating the US album charts in the '60s and '70s, British rock acts are a rarity at the top these days.
The only other UK chart-toppers in the past decade have been Radiohead's Kid A, and the Beatles' 1, both from 2000; Led Zeppelin's 2003 live album How The West Was Won; and Radiohead's In Rainbows this past January.
